DOMS stands for delayed onset muscle soreness. When I was on one of my clinicals for PT, I said the phrase “the DOMS effect” and got really made fun of for that. I don’t know where I learned that, I certainly didn’t make it up. I probably learned it in college. I went to college in the south, southerners are weird. (Just kidding Alyson) 🙂 I actually love the south. Whenever I can afford it, I’m moving somewhere below the Mason-Dixon line, or Europe, I might move to Europe. Whenever something new is done with a muscle, you’re going to be sore. After the stroke, I was sore a lot the next day. Sometimes the soreness lasted like a week. That’s OK. My muscles had to relearn a whole lot of stuff and it made me sore a lot. Good thing I knew what it was because I would imagine that soreness could be quite frightening. Even stretching can cause DOMS. Don’t think that you have to do some kind of major workout to be sore.

There were years when longed to feel soreness and/or pain! The location of my stroke caused me to no longer experience pain. I was numb for about seven years. I never knew if I was hurting myself or pulling muscles. Then, suddenly, one time I fell down and it hurt…actually Hurt! I was so happy. DOMS was never an experience for me, but I would have welcomed it in a heartbeat.
So where in Europe would you move if you had the opportunity? I hope you have had a wonderful start to 2013.
WOW! I’m so glad you wrote this, it never occurred to me that someone wouldn’t experience DOMS. I would move to France. 🙂 Hope you have had a great start to the new year too!!
I’ve never heard about DOMS. Is that why after exercise people can be more sore the 2nd day after the workout? Do you experience trigger point muscle soreness? I tend to use racket balls, tennis balls, etc to apply pressure when stretching to clear knots. I also wish you a wonderful start to 2013!
Yes, DOMS is the soreness after a workout. Keep stretching out those knots, happy new year! 🙂
